Bit and bridle fitting consultation.

Fully Lantra qualified in bit and bridle fitting with extensive knowledge of riding and training. Impartial, expert advice for you and your horse. I am happy to work with other professionals to support the welfare of your horse. The health, safety and comfort of your horse is paramount to each consultation. (My recommendations are based solely on your horses needs, I am NOT on commission to any bit manufacturers or suppliers)

Signs that your horse is unhappy  with their bit and/or bridle

  • Not wanting to be tacked up; trying to move away, throwing the head up or clenching the teeth.
  • Rubbing their mouth or head after being bridled or after untacking.
  • Becoming ear shy or moving the head when trying to fasten the noseband.
  • Evading the contact with the bit; drawing the tongue back, putting the tongue out to the side or
  • over the bit, opening the mouth, becoming hollow with the head up.
  • Snatching the reins out of the riders hands or pulling down on the contact, tense through the jaw.
  • Tilting or constantly moving the head position.
  • Unwilling to move forward, dropping behind the vertical, napping, shying or rearing.
  • Moving stiffly with flat gaits, an inconsistent rhythm or becoming crooked.
  • If crooked the horse will become uncomfortable and often starts napping, bucking or kicking out.
  • Difficulty with transitions, canter leads or becoming disunited.
  • Rushing in their paces or when jumping they may run out, jump hollowly or refuse.

What is involved in a bit and bridle fit consultation?...

I will ask for some background information before your consultation to save some time on the day.
This will include a full history of the horse along with any issues you are having and what you are
wanting to achieve from a consultation.

On the day I will start with an initial assessment of your horse in the stable, looking for any signs
of sensitivity or discomfort. I will assess the conformation of the horse’s body, head and mouth
and how these may affect the fitting of tack and impact the work asked of your horse.

Next I will ask you to tack up and ride in your usual tack and discuss the response of your horse
to this. I will be looking at how the horse moves naturally when on a long rein and then on a
contact and looking for any signs of discomfort or resistance.

We can then move on to making any adjustments or changes to the bridle and I will ask you to
ride again to feel for any improvements. Once we are happy that the bridle is comfortable we can
start looking at the bit.

From the initial assessment I will have selected some for you to try that I feel would be most
suitable. With each change of bit we can discuss how your horse responds and moves from what
I am seeing and what you are feeling. We may need to return to a previous bit to confirm our
thoughts.

A written record of the assessment with recommendations will be provided after your
appointment.
