Signs that your horse is unhappy with their bit and/or bridle
- Not wanting to be tacked up; trying to move away, throwing the head up or clenching the teeth.
- Rubbing their mouth or head after being bridled or after untacking.
- Becoming ear shy or moving the head when trying to fasten the noseband.
- Evading the contact with the bit; drawing the tongue back, putting the tongue out to the side or
- over the bit, opening the mouth, becoming hollow with the head up.
- Snatching the reins out of the riders hands or pulling down on the contact, tense through the jaw.
- Tilting or constantly moving the head position.
- Unwilling to move forward, dropping behind the vertical, napping, shying or rearing.
- Moving stiffly with flat gaits, an inconsistent rhythm or becoming crooked.
- If crooked the horse will become uncomfortable and often starts napping, bucking or kicking out.
- Difficulty with transitions, canter leads or becoming disunited.
- Rushing in their paces or when jumping they may run out, jump hollowly or refuse.
